| Lots of video game playing: what every Friday night should be |
[sep. 2e, 2006|15:40] |
I am getting settled in at college. I have been here two weeks now,
and I just finished my first full week of classes. I do not have much
homework and, so far, my classes are easy. I am not expecting that
to keep up, but I am taking a rather light course load (16 credits).
Last night I went to DDR club for the first time. There was too long
a line for the metal pads (Cobalt Fluxes) to play very much,
so I mostly played SSBM. I was definitely out of practice, but after
a few rounds I was doing okay. I even won one round. I think the people
there are better than me, but not by very much. I'll just have to
practice more. :-D
After DDR club ended at midnight, I headed back to my dorm, where
I found some people hanging out and playing Soul Caliber 2 (XBox)
in Chris's room. I watched a few rounds and then played a little.
Chris has a rather large collection of movies and games and he
brought a XBox, PS2, GCN, N64, and SNES. I thought I brought too
much stuff.
After that, I wandered back toward my room and found Karren and Brian
playing Warcraft 3 (arranged teams on BNET). That was fun to watch.
Karren was nice and calm and moving at a reasonable speed.
Brian was moving really quickly. He just kept clicking the mouse
button. It looked like he did every action at least three times.
He kept cycling through all of his unit/building groups.
I think he used to play Starcraft tournaments when he lived in Korea.
I was just watching, but I will probably try to join them some
other time.
I actually got some homework assigned sometime late last night,
so I am going to do that now.

| The past two months or so |
[aoû. 27e, 2006|18:46] |
I have not really written anything here for a long time. So, here's a quick
recap of my summer vacation: I graduated high school. About a week later,
I went to China. (I think that was covered pretty well in my past few entries.)
I was home for another week before heading off to Long Island, where
I stayed at my friend Peter's house for a few days. Peter was my roommate
last summer at Harvard. Erin, our mutual friend, flew up from Austin to hang out
with us. That was a lot of fun. Then I went to Montauk to vacation with my
family for a few days. It was not great weather, but we went to the beach anyway.
After that, I was home for about three weeks. I pretty much just hung out with
friends for a lot of the time. Then, on August 18th at 3:00am, I headed off to
Cornell.
I got to Cornell at 7:25am with very little sleep. They did not let us start
moving in until 8:05.
I had a week of orientation stuff, and then classes started on Thursday. I have
met a few people (or at least saw them once and friended them on Facebook)
and pretty much know the people on my floor.

| POTC? |
[juil. 9e, 2006|16:08] |
So, uh, who has not seen POTC yet and would like to see it?
BTW, I am back home and will be finishing the China journal entries soon. All of the photos are up now. |

| Soldering |

My metal DDR pads are working once again. Both of them just needed a little soldering. Naturally, I tested them by failing at playing doubles.
Most impressively, on one, the solder did not fail: the bond between the metal and plastic parts of the circuit board did. It took me a minute to realize that the hunk of metal attached to the wire was not all solder.

| The End has come! |
[mai. 8e, 2006|23:12] |
The end of my APs, that is. I took Physics C: Mechanics and
Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism today.
(The latter exam's name is why the blank on the answer sheet for exam name is so long.)
I definitely got at least a 4 on E&M, but it is quite possible that I did not get a 5,
which would be really annoying because I would have to retake the course in college.
Now that I am done with my APs, I have my time freed up for much more important
tasks like freeing the Lylat System. Yep, that's right, I'm trying to get all the medals
in Star Fox 64.
On a completely different note,
please tell me that I am not the only one who did not know about this:
<aebonyne> OMG, the DOS one working directory per drive letter actually has a use other than for the CD command!
<aebonyne> ... okay, I feel really stupid having never noticed this before, but x: and x:\ do not actually mean the same thing.
<Michael1> ...They don't? O_o
<aebonyne> ex: c:
<aebonyne> cd d:\winxp2
<aebonyne> dir d:
<aebonyne> dir d:\
<aebonyne> the first dir lists d:\winxp2
<aebonyne> the second dir lists d:\
<Michael1> Ah, nifty
<aebonyne> note that ls completely ignores this
<aebonyne> Also, I have no idea why I typed dir in the first place.

| Oh, yeah, I have an LJ. |
[mar. 25e, 2006|12:57] |
Anyone interested in going to see
Inside Man tonight? It actually
looks like it should be a good movie. It is showing at Seymour at 6:50 and 9:30 or
at the "Post De Lux" 6:40 and 9:50. I would say that 6:50 at Seymour would make the
most sense. Who's in?

| Rakka is home. (again) |

I sent Rakka in to Dell again two Thursdays ago with a message requesting that they just replace the motherboard. They did so, and hopefully that means that Rakka will actually work now. Seems okay so far, but last time I did not encounter any problems for a week. Well, okay except for a piece being bent where the hard drive goes in, so it barely fits now.

I am having a few people over to watch the start of Evangelion tomorrow. (It's an anime, your good old normal giant robots* and end of the world type stuff.) Anyone interested?
EDIT: Wow, watched 19 eps in one day. |

| Vacation status report |
[fév. 24e, 2006|23:35] |
I beat the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask!
Yes, that did need its own paragraph. I own the gold cartridge and I just beat it
today; isn't that pretty pathetic? The gold cartridge&emdash;complete with fancy
holographic label&emdash;is the pre-order bonus version. In other words, I have
had the game since October 26, 2001, and I just beat it.
So that accounts for #1 of my
vacation goals.
I have been doing okay on #3 (sleep), not great. On the other hand,
I have been quite lacking in fulfilling #2 (play Mafia). Unfortunately,
I doubt that will be remedied.
I guess I should mention Lou's addendum to that list: the Nerf war.
I think it was a lot better than any of the other wars I have been at
because no one there was a complete newbie. I got five kills&hellip
two of which were knife kills.
